A wheelchair is a mobility device on wheels. It is popularly used by crippled and disabled people. It is used in instances when one is injured, disabled or is too weak to walk due to illness. It can be seen regularly in hospitals and ambulances; it is used for patients that are too sick to walk on their own two feet.

The public has a negative impression of it. For them, this metal chair with two wheels, like crutches, symbolizes weakness, of helplessness. But in spite of this, wheelchair-ridden people do not lose heart in becoming active and participative in the society. In fact, they organize events for people running around with two wheels, such as a race that is held around the world once a year. There are wheel chair basketball players, wheel chair runners, and wheel chair triathletes all around the world.

They realize that their weakness is actually their strength and they succeeded in promoting an equal treatment to the disabled. Now, they share the glamour, glory and fame as anyone else can. In fact, on August 3, 2007 a wheelchair basketball player by the name of Jennifer Krempien was named as the flag bearer of Canada to the 2007 Parapanamerican Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Even airline companies, such as AirAsia, are ready to spend 6 million in Malaysian Ringgit just to integrate disabled-friendly facilities in its airports and airlines. The government, in turn, respected the courage and braveness showed by millions of wheelchair bound citizens.

With these, government of different countries all over the world continued with their mandate of placing building, road and sidewalk accessibility for the disabled on every street corner. These are the areas with the man in a wheel chair sign. Relative to this, this sign has been incorporated in traffic signal lights. This is because there have been incidents of hit-and-run accidents involving disabled in a wheel chair and the government felt it necessary to start considering the safety of the disabled to avoid future accidents.

The physical weakness of the disabled and the crippled didn't deter them to succeed in becoming strong citizens of the community. They are the real role models of courage and what it really takes to be brave, even in a wheelchair.
