The most common type of wheel chair carrier that is purchases is the one that is made not only to lift a wheel chair but to lift a motorcycle or scooter as well. These attach to the back of a pick-up, car or van and are used when there is not enough space to put the wheelchair into the vehicle. The carrier has a good sized ramp and needs no mechanized devices to make it work. It simply folds down before being loaded with the wheel chair before being folded back up. The wheel chair is then strapped in place and ready for the driving trip. This is an easy to use storage device. It keeps the wheel chair in place on the back of the vehicle until it is needed. To protect it from the elements a tarp can cover the wheelchair to keep it from being rained or snowed on. These are not expensive, usually costing in the neighborhood of four hundred dollars, and are easy to use.

There are also electrically powered models that are available to lift the wheel chair into a van or other vehicle. These use a rechargeable battery which is an advantage because it makes it so much easier to install yourself. On the other hand it is equally easy to hire someone to put it in for you. The wheel chair carrier can be bought in a store that specializes in lifts and carriers or online and be delivered directly to your home. These are a little more expensive based on what they are required to do which is to carry the wheelchair, with its occupant, into the back of the van where they can be strapped in place for the ride.

But this is not the only type of wheel char carrier that can be used. There are ones that are on the public transport systems that allow for a passenger in a wheel chair to have proper access to buses. These are not on all buses; some simply kneel down to accommodate the wheelchair while others, especially private ones, use carriers.
